Some places are remembered not just for what they are, but for the stories they hold. Hirakud Dam is one such place, a landmark that has become deeply woven into the landscape and memory of Odisha.
This Sambalpuri cotton saree draws its inspiration from Hirakud Dam, the world’s longest earthen dam, translating the landmark and its surrounding landscape into a piece of textile storytelling. The body carries detailed woven depictions of the dam, its vast reservoir and the distinctive structures and sights around it. The name “Hirakud Dam” appears in both English and Odia, giving the saree an unmistakable sense of place.
The story extends beyond the dam itself. Woven into the saree are illustrations inspired by some of the well-known landmarks around Burla and Hirakud, including the Gandhi Minar and Nehru Minar, along with scenes of the surrounding landscape and water.
An earthy olive-green base brings warmth to the architectural motifs in mustard and ochre, while the deep burgundy border and Anchal frame the story with a rich, traditional character. Classic Sambalpuri geometric patterns complete the composition.
More than a saree, this is a woven portrait of a place, a celebration of Hirakud, its landmarks, and the landscape that has made it part of Odisha’s story.
