Traditionally drawn during auspicious occasions, Jhunti is an important form of Odisha’s folk-art tradition, used to adorn the thresholds and walls of the home. Its flowing floral, geometric, and figurative forms reflect ideas of beauty, auspiciousness, and tradition. In this saree, that expressive visual language is translated from drawn lines into the precision of Sambalpuri weaving.
What drew us to this particular saree is not simply the design, but the way it has been executed. Set against a deep Indigo ground, layered blooms, curling vines, stylised figures, and animal forms unfold across the body in Peacock Teal. The combination gives the familiar motifs a richer, more contemporary character, while the fine detailing reflects the precision of the weave.
The anchal becomes more elaborate, bringing together floral medallions, scrolling vines, geometric elements, and closely arranged woven bands. As the saree unfolds, the composition moves naturally from the more open floral panels of the body into the denser detailing of the anchal.
What makes this particular Floral Jhunti special is the combination of colour, craftsmanship, and execution. The design belongs to a familiar traditional vocabulary; it is the refinement of this particular interpretation that caught our attention.
Woven by a master artisan from Sonepur, the saree reflects an exceptional level of precision and attention to detail, from the fine floral panels of the body to the closely worked composition of the anchal.
