The Five Fabrics of Sambalpuri
While Sambalpuri sarees are woven today in dozens of polyester blends and mixed fabrics, these five traditional fabrics remain the true foundation of the craft, cherished across generations for their distinct texture, drape and character.

Craftmanship
Art of Bandha: Ikat & Double Ikat
Bandha is the signature art of Sambalpuri weaving, where threads are tied and dyed before weaving.
In Double Ikat, both warp and weft are patterned and precisely aligned, creating one of handloom's most intricate and celebrated techniques.
SYMBOLISM
Motifs: Not Just Patterns
Motifs are more than decorative patterns - they carry stories, beliefs, and cultural memory. Each symbol is carefully woven into the fabric through the Bandha technique, giving meaning to every drape.
Signature motifs: Shankha (conch), Chakra (wheel), Matsya (fish), Phula (flower), and other symbols inspired by nature, spirituality, and everyday life.
Identity
The Finest Weaving Clusters
The story of Sambalpuri handloom begins in the weaving clusters of Western Odisha. For generations, master artisans across Sambalpur, Bargarh–Barpali, Sonepur (Subarnapur), and Balangir–Boudh have preserved and refined the art of Bandha weaving.
Today, these clusters remain the heart of the tradition, producing the authentic handwoven sarees protected under GI Tag No. 208 (Sambalpuri Bandha Saree & Fabrics).
